Mask project
The mask project was about our idenity and what it is made up of and we had to write what each symbol means on the mask.
Perceptions
By Ben Clark
My mask is under construction because I’m still building my identity. What I have learned about my identity is that I am socialized in my gender which is a male. The arm represents to be a man, to support the family do are gender roles in society. I have been socialized by my schools to believe that males have certain roles rather than females. Males have to be protectors of their families, and give their children a good school to go to. Males have to show that they are tough. Males cannot show certain weakness like crying. Males should not cry because it makes them look insecure and anyone can walk over them. The way that society has influenced me, in my gender is with gym signs representing strong men. For example many job commercials you see are showing men in the main roles.
On top of the mask is a pilots hat, it represents the drive to be a commercial airline pilot. Why I what to be an airline pilot is to continue the history of my family, the Clarks being pilots which is also represented by the two little planes. Also, being flown by my Dad in an AIRBUS 319 to San Antonio TX and back to Phoenix AZ which is represented by the bigger plane. Another key part that played in me wanting to become a pilot is when my brother Jason and I had a great chance to operate a Boeing 737 flight simulator used for the Airline. This is represented by the image under the hat.
School has been really hard for me, because I learned that I am dyslexic. I went through many programs to try to fix my dyslexia. I could not spell, read or write very well. Due to my disability I feel like I cannot do things as quickly as the other student which has made school hard for me. I found help at the Liberty School here in Durango, Co.
The boy and the book is me being frustrated by homework and reading because of my dyslexia. It is on the inside of my mask because this is how I feel on the inside when I am doing homework and other school work. The reason I keep coming back to school is because I want to succeed. I am going to succeed in school by using dragon-speak, working with the ESS Department and asking my teachers to help me in doing my assignments in a different way.
I learned that we are socialized by the media, family and school more than we think we are. I have been socialized by the media to support the family. Media has shown me that males can eat whatever they want and females have to watch what they eat. My family has socialized me to believe if I work hard I will do well in life. My family has also socialized me to be accepting of all different kinds of people.
